James Stevens Curl
Built 1841-51, the Terrace was designed, probably, by Owen Browne Carter (1806-59), in whose office worked (1841-4) the young George Edmund Street (1824-81), so would the Terrace be an early work of Street? This handsome group, of yellow brick with limestone dressings on a rusticated oölitic limestone basement, includes No. 5, Curl’s former home, the façade and balustrade of which he restored with the help of a Listed Buildings Grant. Work included rebuilding the balustrade at the front completely, restoring the badly decayed limestone dressings, and repointing the brickwork with lime-mortar.
